Croatia is of course best known for the beautiful beaches and bays. But also the Croatian cities are worth a visit. For example, the idyllic Zadar, which forms the gateway to the Dalmatian region. The city has nearly 80,000 inhabitants and offers the perfect combination of sightseeing and culture, beach and leisure.

Because here you have everything - in the morning a walk through the picturesque old town of Zadar with small breaks in beautiful cafes and then dangle your soul in the hidden beautiful bay. Later we will go back to the city for dinner in the sophisticated restaurant, where you can recharge your batteries with the tasty local cuisine, before dipping into the busy nightlife of the Croatian city.

Zadar is located on a narrow headland on the Adriatic Sea, with the old town of Zadar connected to the mainland via a picturesque drawbridge.

Getting to Zadar

Getting to Zadar is possible with many different means of transport. The most popular is of course the plane, because that is the fastest and most comfortable. In addition, the city has its own airport, which is served directly from Germany (eg from Berlin, Dusseldorf and Cologne). The airport is only 9 km from the city center and you can take a bus to the city center.

If you want to travel around Croatia a bit, you can easily do it, because the bus and train connections are very good. And renting a rental car is cheap and uncomplicated.

If you really want to be flexible, independent and not limited in terms of luggage, you can reach Zadar with your own car. However, the ride is long and you should allow enough breaks and the odd traffic jam for the high season.

Zadar has a lot of sights to, especially in the beautiful old town, which still today reminds of its past as a Roman fortress and is framed by a colossal city wall. A walk along ancient gates and Venetian buildings is absolutely worthwhile and is a real journey into the past.

Nice is also the People's Square Narodni Trg, where one meets a successful mix of historic buildings and cozy cafes and restaurants.

The church Sv. Donat is the symbol of Zadar and dates back to the 9th century. Especially in summer you can listen to demanding classical concerts. Because the acoustics in the historic church is truly overwhelming and impressive.

The cathedral is also called St. Anastasia and is the largest in Dalmatia. This historic building is popular with tourists and locals and should definitely be visited.

If you are tired after sightseeing and walking in the old town, you can sit in one of the many restaurants under a parasol and order a pasticada. With this hearty meat dish from the Dalmatian cuisine you will quickly regain your strength.

What to do in Zadar

Especially in the summer months of July and August, many events take place in Zadar and the surrounding towns, which you can visit if you want to do something.

Absolutely you should visit the so-called sea organ, which was built in 2005 according to a plan by the architect Nikola Basic. On a length of 60 m, the steps extend down to the sea. Perpendicular to the shore are 35 pipes, at the end of which so-called labiums (pipes) are installed. The waves generate an air pressure by their force, which sounds 7 chords in 5 tones.

You can spend a romantic evening at the place Greeting to the Sun - Pozdrav Suncu. The main pane consists of a 22 m large and 300-layer glass plate and shines in the evening in all imaginable colors. A wonderful spectacle!

For bathing tourists there are numerous beaches and enchanting bathing bays. The most popular beaches in the city are the great pebble beaches Borik and Kolovare. In the immediate vicinity of the beaches there is a wide range of leisure activities, restaurants and bars.
