Croatia has quietly become one of Europe"s most desirable villa destinations — and the numbers bear it out. Flights from London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and Birmingham to Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Pula take around 2.5 hours. The sea is warm from June through September. And unlike some Mediterranean destinations, Croatia still has stretches of coastline that feel genuinely unspoiled.
But the real reason people come back? The combination. History and beaches. Islands and fine dining. Ancient cities you can walk in the morning, crystal-clear water you can dive into by noon, and a glass of local wine on your villa terrace by sunset. Croatia does all of it — and a private villa is by far the best way to experience it.
| Your Villsy Villa | A Typical Hotel |
| Private pool — yours alone, open whenever you like | Shared pool, sun-lounger battles by 8am |
| Full kitchen — local market, your own rhythm | Buffet breakfast at fixed times, expensive dinners out |
| Entire property to yourself — real privacy | Thin walls, corridors, other people"s children |
| Space for everyone — one booking, one price | Multiple rooms, supplements, separate bills |
| Pets welcome at many villas | Almost always: no |
| Best price guarantee — what you see is what you pay | Dynamic pricing, resort fees, hidden charges |

Croatia is longer than you might think — about the same distance from top to bottom as London to Edinburgh. The three main holiday regions each offer something genuinely different, and picking the wrong one is the most common mistake first-timers make.

Let"s be honest: Dubrovnik is on everyone"s list — and for good reason. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of the most beautiful places in Europe. You can walk the city walls in the morning, take a boat to the Elafiti islands by afternoon, and be back at your villa pool in time for sunset. The Game of Thrones filming locations are a genuine draw (Kings Landing = Dubrovnik Old Town). South Dalmatia also includes the Pelješac Peninsula — home to some of Croatia"s finest red wines — and the island of Korčula, often described as a smaller, quieter Dubrovnik.

Hvar is Croatia"s most glamorous island — a long, thin sliver of lavender fields, pine forests and some of the clearest water in the Adriatic. Hvar Town has a lively restaurant and bar scene; the nearby Pakleni Islands are a snorkeller"s and sailor"s paradise. But Central Dalmatia is far more than Hvar: Split is one of the most lived-in ancient cities on earth (people still shop and socialise inside Diocletian"s 4th-century palace), and Brač is home to Zlatni Rat — the beach on every Croatia postcard.
Getting to Hvar: ferry from Split (35 min) or catamaran from Split (1 hr)

Istria tends to be discovered on a second or third Croatia trip — and those who find it never stop going back. The peninsula in the far north feels more Italian than Croatian in places: the hilltop towns of Motovun and Grožnjan, the Roman amphitheatre in Pula, the old Venetian port of Rovinj. The food is extraordinary — truffles, home-made pasta, olive oil that wins international awards, and a local white wine (Malvasia) that pairs with all of it. Villas here tend to be set inland among vineyards and olive groves, with pools overlooking rolling hills rather than the sea — a very different, and very special, kind of holiday.
| Region | Best For | Fly To | Flight Time (UK) | Peak Months |
| Dubrovnik & South Dalmatia | Culture, couples, wine | Dubrovnik (DBV) | ~2.5 hrs | Jun, Sep |
| Hvar & Central Dalmatia | Beaches, groups, island-hopping | Split (SPU) | ~2.5 hrs | Jun–Sep |
| Istria | Food, quiet, repeat visitors | Pula (PUY) | ~2.5 hrs | May–Sep |
| Kvarner Bay | Nature, families, off the beaten track | Rijeka (RJK) / Pula | ~2.5 hrs | Jun–Aug |
The short answer: Croatia has one of the most reliable summer climates in Europe. The longer answer involves knowing which month suits your kind of holiday — because July and August are not always the best choice.
| Month | Air Temp. (°C) | Sea Temp. (°C) | Sun (hrs/day) | Rain Days | Crowds | Verdict |
| May | 17–22 | 18 | 9 | 7 | Low | Lovely for sightseeing, sea a little cool |
| June | 21–26 | 21 | 10 | 6 | Medium | Sweet spot — warm, swimmable, not rammed |
| July | 24–29 | 24 | 11 | 4 | Very high | Hottest and busiest — book months ahead |
| August | 24–29 | 25 | 11 | 4 | Very high | Warmest sea, school holidays, peak prices |
| September | 20–25 | 24 | 9 | 5 | Low–med | The insider"s choice — warm, quieter, cheaper |
| October | 15–20 | 20 | 6 | 8 | Low | Still mild — great for walking and culture |
The Villsy take on timing:
September is the month the travel industry doesn"t want you to know about. The sea hits 24-25 degrees – its warmest of the year — the beaches empty out, restaurants start trying harder, and villa prices drop noticeably. If your children are past school age, September in Croatia is a no-brainer. For families tied to school holidays: June half-term is excellent and far less chaotic than July or August.
One of the great advantages of a Croatia villa holiday is using your property as a base. Unlike a hotel, you"re not paying for a room you"re not in — the villa is there waiting when you get back, pool and all. Here"s what"s within easy reach of each region:
| From your villa in… | Day trip options within 1-2 hours |
| Dubrovnik area | Korčula island, Mljet National Park, Pelješac wine route, Montenegro border |
| Split / Hvar | Zlatni Rat beach (Brač), Vis island (no cars), Krka waterfalls, Trogir old town |
| Istria | Venice (2 hrs by ferry from Poreč or Pula), Plitvice Lakes, Rovinj, truffle hunts |
| Kvarner Bay | Plitvice Lakes National Park (2 hrs), Rab island, Krk island, Opatija by coast road |
Villsy local tip — rent a boat for a day:
In Dalmatia and Kvarner, renting a small motor boat (no licence required for boats under 5m) for a day
unlocks coves and beaches you simply can"t reach any other way. Most harbours have day rentals. Ask our team for recommendations at your specific location — this is where local knowledge counts.

One of Croatia"s biggest advantages for British travellers is the flight time. Most routes from UK airports to Croatian destinations take around 2.5 hours — shorter than flying to Spain"s Canary Islands, and comparable to Majorca or Corfu.
| UK Airport | Croatian Destination | Approx. Flight Time | Airlines (check current routes) |
| London Gatwick / Heathrow | Dubrovnik, Split, Pula, Zadar | 2 hrs 20 – 2 hrs 40 | easyJet, British Airways, Jet2, Ryanair |
| Manchester | Dubrovnik, Split, Pula | 2 hrs 30 – 2 hrs 50 | Jet2, easyJet, TUI |
| Bristol | Dubrovnik, Split, Pula | 2 hrs 20 – 2 hrs 40 | easyJet, Jet2 |
| Edinburgh | Dubrovnik, Split | 2 hrs 45 – 3 hrs | easyJet, Jet2 |
| Birmingham | Dubrovnik, Split, Pula | 2 hrs 25 – 2 hrs 45 | Jet2, Ryanair, TUI |
| Belfast | Dubrovnik | ~2 hrs 45 | Jet2 |
Villsy travel tip — hire car vs transfers:
For Istria and Kvarner villas, hiring a car at the airport is highly recommended — it unlocks the
region and makes grocery runs and day trips effortless. For Dubrovnik and Hvar, many guests prefer
a transfer to the villa and then use ferries and water taxis for island days. Ask our team what works best for your specific villa location before you book your hire car.
Villsy bookings are straightforward — but these are the questions worth asking before you click confirm:
| Why book with Villsy and not a larger platform: ✔ Every villa personally inspected — not just listed. What you see is what you get. ✔ Best price guarantee — find it cheaper anywhere, we will beat the price. ✔ Local Croatian team — not a call centre. Real people who know the villas. ✔ Allianz travel insurance available at checkout — full trip cancellation cover. ✔ Secure payment — Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Diners. SSL encrypted. |
Different, rather than better or worse. Croatia has more dramatic scenery, better-preserved old towns and fewer crowds outside peak season. Greece generally has more islands, better beaches on the Aegean side and longer sunshine seasons. Croatia wins on proximity for UK travellers — most routes are under 2.5 hours. Both are excellent choices; Croatia tends to feel fresher and less over-touristed.
Dubrovnik is genuinely extraordinary — but yes, it is busy in July and August. The trick is timing: arrive before 9am or after 5pm, stay in a villa outside the city and drive in, and consider September when cruise ship numbers drop sharply. The Old Town at dusk, nearly empty, is one of the most beautiful sights in Europe.
June and September are the sweet spots for most travellers. The sea is warm (21°C in June, 24°C in September), the sun shines for 9–10 hours a day, there are fewer than 6 rainy days per month, and the crowds are manageable. July and August are ideal if you want peak beach energy — but book at least 4–6 months ahead and expect higher prices.
Absolutely — Croatia is a very dog-friendly country, and Villsy has a wide selection of pet-friendly villas with enclosed gardens and private pools. Filter by ‘Pets allowed" when searching, and check the individual villa profile for any small additional pet fee.
It depends heavily on your region. In Istria and Kvarner, a hire car is strongly recommended — it makes the holiday significantly better. In Dubrovnik, many guests manage without one (Uber and taxis are reliable, and a car in Dubrovnik"s Old Town area is more hindrance than help). For Split and Hvar, it depends on your villa"s location — our team can advise specifically.
For July and August, book 4–6 months ahead — the best villas go fast, especially those with sea views or direct beach access. For June and September, 2–3 months is usually fine. For May and October, you often have good last-minute options, occasionally at reduced rates.
At Villsy, the price you see is the price you pay — no resort fees, no mandatory extras. End-of-stay cleaning, Wi-Fi and air conditioning are standard inclusions. Bed linen and towels are included at most properties. The specific villa profile lists exactly what"s included before you book.
Yes — and it"s one of the best things about a Dalmatia villa holiday. Croatia has an excellent ferry network run by Jadrolinija, and catamarans connect Split with Hvar, Vis, Brač and other islands daily in summer. From a Hvar villa, you can reach Split in 1 hour and Dubrovnik in 2.5 hours by catamaran. Our team can help plan routes based on your villa location.

Villsy is a Croatian company, based in Pazin in the heart of Istria. We are not an algorithm or a listings aggregator — we are a team of people who actually live here, know these villas, and have visited every single property on our platform before it goes live.
That means when you book with Villsy, the villa in your photos is the villa you arrive at. The pool is the right size. The sea view is real. We think that"s a fairly basic expectation — and we"re slightly amazed it"s still not standard across the industry.
