Your Luxe Villas Collection team! Nin – The Oldest Royal Town in Croatia
Located on a small island connected to the mainland by two stone bridges, Nin is one of the oldest and most historically significant towns in Croatia. Its history dates back over three thousand years, and throughout the centuries, it served as the political, cultural, and religious center of Croatian rulers. Nin was the first royal capital of Croatia, making it a place of great historical importance.
Historical and Cultural Landmarks
The town is rich in archaeological sites and monuments that testify to its glorious past. Some of the most famous attractions include:
Church of St. Cross – known as the "smallest cathedral in the world," dating back to the 9th century, it is a symbol of early Christian architecture in Dalmatia.
Church of St. Nicholas – located on a small hill, it is believed to be the coronation site of Croatian kings. According to legend, every new king had to ride his horse to this church to symbolically demonstrate his rule over the land.
Remains of the Roman Forum and Temple – evidence of Nin’s importance in ancient times when it was a Roman colony.
City walls and mosaics – another testimony to the rich history of the town.
A special landmark is the statue of Bishop Gregory of Nin, created by the famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović. According to legend, touching the bishop's big toe brings good luck, making it a popular tradition among visitors.
Natural Beauty and Attractions
In addition to its cultural and historical heritage, Nin is known for its stunning natural beauty. The town is surrounded by long sandy beaches with shallow and warm waters, making it ideal for families with children. Queen’s Beach, one of the most famous in Croatia, offers a spectacular view of the Velebit mountain and crystal-clear sea.
Nin is also famous for its healing mud, which has been used in natural therapies for centuries to treat various health conditions. Many visitors come specifically to experience its therapeutic benefits.
Nin Saltworks – The White Gold of Dalmatia
One of the oldest saltworks in Europe, Nin Saltworks, still produces salt in a completely natural way, without additives or industrial processing. Visitors can see how salt is traditionally harvested from the sea and taste high-quality sea salt and "fleur de sel," considered a true gourmet delight.
Gastronomy and Local Delicacies
Nin’s cuisine is based on fresh seafood, olive oil, local wines, and traditional Dalmatian specialties. Nearby taverns and restaurants offer dishes such as fresh fish, octopus under the bell, lamb, and homemade cheese and prosciutto.
